The mad Cow Motorsports team showed up at the track ready to race for another top-10 finish but it wasn't to be.
On 2003 tires that had reached their terminal hardness we still managed to qualify in our highest position, 16th, with a time that was finally in the 17-second range.
Another two-tenths faster and our 16th starting position would have been 6th- that's how close the Legends field is at the venerable Old Dominion Speedway.
The race started with 31 cars on the 3/8th mile banked oval track with the pole-sitter (Dave Hendershott) dropping out before the start- his car is for sale and he wanted to prove a point, but not risk the car in race conditions. That jiggled the order a bit and the Mad Cow car got off to a OK start and started picking up positions as the early laps unwound. A spin by the 29 car bunched up the field and the 34 car made a demon restart, passing some cars that were asleep at the switch when the green came out.
We were running 12th when the red mist descended on the driver and we spun coming hard out of turn 4. Narrowly missed by one of the Losh team cars, we avoided any contact and resumed near the end of the field. Now, with a real job ahead of the Mad Cow car, we sliced through the back of the field to end up in 11th or so after around 20 laps in. The car had developed a bad loose setup during the race and while following Chad Pieper (#22) we spun again, this time coming out of turn 2. This time we didn't have enough time to re-pass the entire back of the field again and the race ended with us in 15th, as we challenged another fast rookie, Anthony Fleming.
All in all, a good race for the mad Cow Motorsports team -- and any race is a good race when you come back with the car in the same number of pieces as when you took the green-- but we are planning to do better in the next race at ODS.
We still lead the Masters class at ODS and run 9th overall after this race, despite the relatively poor finish this week.
But that could change in a heartbeat-- and that's why they call it Racin'!
In other news, Kevin Yeatts, defending 2002 Legends champ at ODS showed up to shake up the joint. Instead of his new 34 Ford "Shorty" he ran the # 13 car of the 2000 Legends ODS champ Marty Armin as a demonstration. Despite old tires and an unfamiliar car, he qualified 5th and finished 4th. Kevin claimed the motor from the winning car driven by Roger Austin Jr.
